In this class, students will learn the importance of personal health and well being in the fire service, physical fitness requirements, safety during emergency response, safety on active fire scenes and securing utilities.

This course will present the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of NFPA 1001. Students in this class will learn proper donning and doffing techniques for PPE, limitations of PPE, inspection and maintenance of PPE, importance of respiratory protection, limitations and maintenance of SCBA and cleaning of SCBA and PPE.

In this class, students will learn the chemistry of fire, products of combustion, different types and uses of fire extinguishers, solid-fuel fire development, smoke reading, types of construction materials and different types of construction.

This course includes instructional content for Tools & Forcible Entry and Loss Control. This course will present the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of NFPA 1001. In this course, students will learn about general tool safety, different types of forcible entry tools, door construction, glass construction, types of locks, through the lock techniques, breaching walls, scene lighting methods, salvage and overhaul tools, air monitoring and evidence preservation.

This course includes instructional content for Ladders and Ventilation. This course will present the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of NFPA 1001. In this class students will learn the importance of vertical, horizontal and hydraulic ventilation, size up, mechanical ventilation, ventilation techniques, types of roof cuts, ventilation equipment maintenance, ladder construction, types of ladders, ladder safety and raising ladder techniques.

This is National Fire Academy (NFA) "Leadership in Supervision: Creating Environments for Professional Growth" Course 0646. This course presents the supervisor with the basic leadership skills and tools needed to perform effectively in the fire and emergency medical services (EMS) environment. The course includes concepts related to a successful transition to supervisory and leadership roles, including concepts of adaptive leadership; change management; active followership; effective communication, including difficult conversations and advocacy-inquiry based dialogue; ethics; authority; power; decision-making; and active engagement through development of a personal plan. This course provides the supervisor with the conceptual foundation and framework for success in leadership roles by exploring creative, analytical, political and critical thinking perspectives. The course addresses skills needed for assessing situations from multiple perspectives, making critical decisions, fostering creativity and innovation, and using persuasion. This is National Fire Academy (NFA) "Leadership in Supervision: Frameworks to Success" Course 0648. This course provides the supervisor with the knowledge and skills to perform successfully in the fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) environments. The course addresses professionalism, resilience, emotional intelligence, and situational awareness, as well as managing conflict, delegating, mentoring, coaching, empowerment, and building collaboration and synergy for professional growth. Specific guidelines must be followed for all NFA courses.

This course is designed to cover initial response objectives to a hazardous materials incident. This block will present the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of OSHA 1910.120 and Chapter 4, 5, 6.2, and 6.6 of NFPA 1072. In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of a hazardous materials response, understanding the hazards, estimating potential harm and planning a response, responder health and safety, characteristics of hazardous materials, transportation of hazardous materials, terrorist incidents, interagency coordination, hazardous material PPE, decontamination methods, monitoring and detection and containment methods.

The course involves study in the areas of human resource management, fire department administration, community relations, budget preparation, and records management. This is a NC Fire and Rescue Commission certification course.

This certification-related course is designed to apprise chief officers of the various aspects and complexities surrounding the operations and organization of North Carolina Fire departments. Emphasis will be placed on ratings and inspections, NFIRS reporting, prevention and relief funds, grant programs, basic line of duty death information, various state associations, and an overview of chief officer expectations in North Carolina. This class will satisfy the 9S insurance inspection criteria as specified by the North Carolina Administrative Code. This certification-related Fire and Life Safety Education (FLSE) course covers the basics of fire and life safety and is the first of three FLSE levels. Students will be introduced to injuries that occur in North Carolina and programs that are designed to prevent these injuries. Students will also discuss the mission of their organizations and the responsibility of prevention education, to include using correct/current fire & life safety educational messages and the role of the Fire & Life Safety Educator. This class is designed to give firefighters and fire & life safety educators ideas and confidence to teach fire safety to all ages. Students will participate in fire safety lessons and teach a safety lesson plans that they can use at their own fire department. Students will also be introduced to new Community Risk Reduction resources they can obtain at no cost. This class is designed to show a new educator how to keep successful records and reports. Students will review and document various fire and life safety educational programs, describe various formats, prepare written reports, and discuss time management and organizational skills. Information will be presented on how to develop and maintain a work schedule, arrange meetings, presentations, and community events, while reducing scheduling conflicts. Working with local media outlets and distributing fire & life safety materials and messages to the community will be discussed in detail. This is a NC Fire and Rescue Commission certification course approved for offering as of July 1, 2017. This course should be offered consistent with the most current Commission guidelines.
