FLI-3717AT Intermediate Heritage Spanish
This intermediate course is designed specifically for native or heritage speakers of Spanish with oral proficiency but little or no formal training in the language. Generally, these are learners who were raised in homes where Spanish was spoken. Students will develop increased competence in the oral and written standard varieties of Spanish in a context that focuses on the particular needs and strengths of heritage learners. Students will strengthen vocabulary, spelling, and grammar skills while learning about cultural diversity and increasing their professional language skills. Students must take a placement test before enrolling. This course is taught in a hybrid format with a combination of in-person and online instruction. This course is designed to provide frontline medical professionals with little or no knowledge of Spanish with basic language skills for communication with Spanish-speaking patients and families in common medical settings. Topics include language used to gather general patient information, manage registration and intake, navigate the medical facility, and describe basic anatomy and symptoms. Students will also discuss cultural perspectives that affect communication with patients from Spanish-speaking areas. Students will learn to use language aids to serve patient needs and understand how to effectively work with professional interpreters.

FLI-3719D Arabic Intensive Reading and Writing
This intermediate level Arabic language course focuses on reading and writing while further developing students' vocabulary and grammar skills. Each week students will read, discuss and translate different authentic texts in Arabic from a variety of sources, such as excerpts from books, blogs, news, and other materials. Relevant grammar and vocabulary will be reviewed for each selection. This course is designed to support intermediate students' skill development and prepare them for further advanced study of the language. Students must demonstrate intermediate Arabic language skills including knowledge of reading and writing in Modern Standard Arabic as determined by the instructor before enrolling. This course is taught fully online with scheduled meeting times. Students will need a computer with reliable access to the internet as well as a headset/microphone for use during online sessions. This course is designed to provide individuals with the required knowledge, tools, and resources to become recognized as a certified Community Health Worker (CHW) in North Carolina working in a variety of healthcare and community settings (Health Departments, Hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Clinics, Faith-based Organizations, etc.). Instruction is designed to cover the nine core competencies essential to working as a certified CHW which include communication, capacity building, service coordination, interpersonal, advocacy, outreach, personal/professional skills. The knowledge base competencies will cover health and social issues that disproportionately impact clients including but not limited to chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma and cancer. Some of the social issues covered will include safety, emergency preparedness, social isolation and adverse childhood experiences (ACES). Students will also learn about the changing health care landscape in North Carolina and how to work with their clients in connecting them to resources through NCCARES 360 and others. Upon completion of this training students will be eligible for listing as a NC Certified Community Health Worker.

This course is designed to provide individuals with the foundational knowledge, tools, and skills to work in care manager roles at various levels. The course focuses on care management and care coordination concepts, principles of care management practice, explores how care management fits within the broader healthcare system, and supports individuals in understanding value-based care. Individuals will be introduced to developing and implementing person-centered care plans to ensure that patients can implement effective self-management strategies to enable their recovery or management of complex, acute, or chronic health conditions. Participants will also learn how to identify and address social drivers of health and other barriers that impact health. Individuals who complete this course may be eligible to work at a variety of healthcare and community settings such as health departments, health systems, federally qualified health centers, clinics, and/or community-based organizations.
