STEM Education

University Transfer Options

Students have several paths to a bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program. The Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation (AATP) degrees provide a foundation for students interested in teaching language arts and social studies. The Associate in Science (AS) and Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation (ASTP) degrees prepare students interested in teaching in science and mathematics.

Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation and Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation

The Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation (AATP) and Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation (ASTP) are approved for transfer to some UNC System universities and independent colleges and universities that are signatories to the NCICU Associate in Arts and Associate in Science for Teacher Preparation Uniform Articulation Agreement.  The degree consists of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of college transfer courses. Students in this program develop a broad liberal arts foundation in writing, math, science, humanities, and social sciences.  They also complete field-specific training through a set of foundational education courses.

The Associate in Arts (AA)

The Associate in Arts (AA) is intended for students who ultimately wish to complete a baccalaureate arts degree at a four-year college or university. Students in this program develop foundational knowledge particularly business, English, fine arts, foreign languages, history, philosophy, psychology, or sociology.

Students should keep in mind the limits on the number of credits that transfer to the four-year university and review all material on the institutions' websites. Requirements may change, and time limits often apply to science coursework. Students should print out and save the for their major and intended transfer university.
