Medical Coding (Continuing Education)
Short Term
Students may elect to sit for certification exams offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders () and/or the American Health Information Management Association (). Since students must meet the respective organization’s examination criteria, practical experience is recommended prior to sitting for these certification exams.
Estimated Cost
Tuition per course: $161-$182
Books for Coding Courses (see note below): $500-$700
Credentialing Exam (AAPC or AHIMA): $299-$399
Note: Codebooks are updated in January each year. Since current year codebooks are required for the certification exam, students may have to purchase a second set of codebooks depending on when they complete the courses and sit for the exam. Instructors will be using the current year codebooks.
Course Sequence
Courses must be taken in the following order:
- Terminology for Anatomy and Physiology
- Medical Coding I

The most efficient and cost-effective course sequence is starting in the fall due to the requirement to have the most current codebooks:

Fall – Medical Coding Exam Prep Bootcamp
