911 Training (Continuing Education)

Short Term

This program is designed to prepare individuals for employment within an Emergency 911 Telecommunications Center.

The Emergency dispatch course provides the foundational functional skills of operating within an Emergency 911 Center. Course work will include instructor led lecture, hands on experience with console and card sets, and opportunities to participate in real time scenarios while learning essential multi-tasking techniques. Upon completion of this course, students will be prepared to effectively operate the functional aspects within an Emergency 911 Center.

The Emergency Telecommunicator Course (ETC) is produced by the IAED and is designed to train new employees unfamiliar with emergency communication centers, emergency telecommunication technology, interpersonal communication, legal issues, and job stress factors. During each course, participants learn through instructor-led lecture, discussion, video segments, audiotape review, hands-on practice and role-playing to increase their expertise and confidence in extreme situations.

The certification-related Telecommunicator Course is designed to meet the training guidelines mandated by the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission. Trainees must successfully pass a state- administered exam as well as demonstrate competency in all skill areas in order to be eligible for certification. Upon completion, students will be prepared for the certification process through the agency that will sponsor them.

Students will also gain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR) which serves as a prerequisite for other certifications that they will acquire through their new hiring agency.

Please email PublicSafetyTraining@durhamtech.edu for information about future course dates and how to apply.

CJC-5020BJ CIT Support Training for 911

Call-takers can play a vital role by connecting individuals to crisis lines and other behavioral health care services, rather than police services, and/or by providing CIT officers with the information needed for a safe, effective response. This 16-hour course of instruction is delivered in two eight-hour sessions conducted on consecutive days. The instruction prepares the 911call-taker to identify the possibility of the call being mental health related, utilize techniques to reduce the emotional level of the caller, and triage the call to dispatch appropriate services or complete a warm handoff to crisis services. If it is determined to dispatch CIT patrol officers, this training will assist in understanding what information should be gathered and relayed to the responding officer. Scenario-based training based on actual mental health related calls for service is also included to allow the attendees to practice the skills and provide further discussion.
