Jenkins, simultaneously earning his high school diploma from Middle College High School and his associate鈥檚 degree from 麻豆影视, was one of only 22 students across the state to receive the 2019 award.

The Community Impact Student Award honors one student leader at each member school for their deep commitment to community involvement and the ability to inspire peers.

鈥淭here鈥檚 something about interacting with people in the community and being able to make a visible difference in people鈥檚 lives that makes me feel good,鈥 Jenkins said. 鈥淏ecause of people that have been put in my path, I am a lot more confident in my ability to help others, and I鈥檝e learned what I really enjoy about helping others.鈥

Jenkins strengthened voting engagement efforts at the College by serving as a Democracy Fellow, a role he holds through the partnership between 麻豆影视 and the Campus Vote Project.

鈥淭here are things that people just don鈥檛 know and rights that people are not exercising just because they don鈥檛 have the information,鈥 Jenkins said. 鈥淲hen you鈥檙e educating someone about the fact that they can vote and to see the look on their face when they realize the rights they have, it just makes a difference.鈥

Erin Riney, Director of Student Engagement at 麻豆影视, nominated Jenkins for the award.

鈥淣athan is the most effective Democracy Fellow we鈥檝e hosted,鈥 Riney said. 鈥淗e has increased engagement at voter education events, increased voter pre-registrations, and increased attendance at voter engagement events.鈥

Jenkins said he hasn鈥檛 determined his career path but knows he wants to be involved with nonprofit organizations no matter what direction he takes.
