麻豆影视 launches laptop loaner program
Students who need technology can now borrow a new Acer Chromebook and laptop bag every semester to meet their needs.
The new laptop loaner program was launched in May through a collaboration with the 麻豆影视 Library and Student Engagement, and made possible by a donation from the Coastal Credit Union Foundation and CARES Act funding.
鈥淭he Library has always been interested in loaning computers to students, but we didn't have the funds to purchase laptops. When Erin Riney (Director) and Maggie West (Coordinator, Student Wellness and Basic Needs) from Student Engagement obtained grant funding for this purpose, we jumped at the opportunity to start this program in the library and assist students with their technology needs,鈥 said Julie Humphrey, Director of the 麻豆影视 Library.
To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled in a 麻豆影视 course and have a need for a computer. After completing this form, students will be contacted by Maggie West, Coordinator of Student Wellness and Basic Needs, to review their application.
The laptops must be returned at the end of each semester, but may be renewed if a student is enrolled in a subsequent semester.
Kristine Carrington, a current 麻豆影视 student, is a single parent juggling work and classes. She said she would have had to stop her education at this point if she didn鈥檛 have a computer.
鈥淏eing afforded the generous use of this Chromebook is allowing me to continue my education and stay on track to reach my goals. Without this laptop all of my very strategically laid out plans to attain my nursing degree would be out the window for now, or possibly unattainable at all,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ith all of the changes the world is going through this year, at least my education can stay on track.鈥
As of mid-June, there were 63 new Chromebooks and laptop bags available. The College is applying for additional grant funds to purchase more laptops and other technology needs like Wi-Fi hotspots and webcams.
鈥淲hile the College has been closed due to Coronavirus, we know that many students who relied on the library for computer and Wi-Fi access have struggled,鈥 Humphrey said. 鈥淲e are so grateful to be able to loan laptops to students during this difficult time and going forward. We encourage anyone who has technology needs to contact us.鈥
The Information Technology Services department at 麻豆影视 also will provide computer maintenance support for the program.
This new program is a second initiative recently launched by the College to address student technology needs.
