Preparing for a New Era of Canvas Quizzes
Mark your calendars! Beginning in mid-May 2025, we are transitioning from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes as our assessment tool in Canvas.
What is New Quizzes?
New Quizzes is a tool instructors can use to create and administer their online quizzes in Canvas. New Quizzes offers familiar question types, such as multiple-choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, matching, essay, and more, in addition to several new question type options. Much of what you can do with "Classic" Quizzes you will also be able to do with New Quizzes.
Highlights of New Quizzes
- Student Accommodations: New Quizzes allows you to set accommodations for a student for all quizzes rather than applying them for each individual quiz.
- New Quiz Types: Explore exciting new quiz types like Hot Spot, Stimulus and Response, and Ordering/Categorization to enhance your assessments.
- Shuffle Answers by Question: Increase the integrity of your quizzes by shuffling answers within each question.
- Waiting Period Between Attempts: Control the timing of student attempts to prevent cheating and promote thoughtful responses.
- Quiz Duplication: Easily duplicate quizzes to save time and effort.
- Instructor Printing: Print quizzes for paper-based assessments or review purposes.
- Partial Points: Award partial credit for multiple-answer, matching, and fill-in-the-blank questions.
Why are we moving to New Quizzes?
In short, Classic Quizzes will become unavailable for use in courses. Canvas uses enforcement dates as deadlines for sunsetting "old" Canvas features. While Canvas has not yet set an official enforcement date, the roadmap for the tool currently ends in September 2025 and Canvas schools will have to adopt soon after that. Therefore, it is imperative that we begin our plan to transition to New Quizzes. This will help us avoid a panicky and rushed transition.
How will I know what to do?
By announcing this change early, we wanted to make sure faculty have time to get a plan in order to carve out some time to get used to New Quizzes. We will walk you through the process of migration (moving your existing quizzes from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes), how to use New Quizzes, and utilizing existing features in the new tool. Instructional Technologies will communicate updates and details of our timeline as the project develops. We wanted to get this on your radar sooner rather than later.
